The government of Belgium is contemplating of making contribution of €2 million in promoting a Blockchain project by the World Food Programme (WFP), the WFP announced April 19. The contribution will reportedly been allowing UN (United Nations) in using Blockchain technology to fight against hunger in impoverished areas. There is piloting of the “Building Blocks” project with other UN agencies and has been implemented in making the cash transfers of WFP to refugees more transparent and efficient. In Jordan, there have been more than 10,000 Syrian refugee camps that are beneficiaries from the project. The donors provided the donations that are used in getting food and other crucial resources.
The presentation of the project has been at the Leveraging Innovation for Humanitarian Action in New York. Commenting on Belgium’s contribution to the initiative, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation, Alexander De Croo, said: “Innovation saves lives. This year, more than 128 mln people across the world will need humanitarian assistance and protection. This is triple the number of three years ago. Only by finding better ways to deliver aid more efficiently will we close the gap between requirements and aid delivery on the ground. Belgium lauds the efforts of WFP to come up with innovative solutions to save more lives and help more people in need.”
In May of 2017, the United Nation announced its plans of using Ethereum Blockchain technology so that the refugees in Jordan are ensured of having access to food rations by distributing coupons which would be used in place of the local currency. There was already testing of the technology by the WFP in Pakistan with more than 10,000 people having benefited.
